Hello and welcome to Bar Owner TV! The NFL football season is right around the corner and right now is about the time bar restaurant owners should be thinking “What can I do differently that will make new and existing customers want to come to my business for football over anywhere else?”
If you think about it, you can go to just about any bar and get a great wing and draft beer special during football. That’s probably the most common food and drink promotion you’ll find. If you find that to be true in your area, then you have a BIG advantage over everyone else right now. Let me explain.
What I do at the beginning of every football season is I buy 4 tickets to two different bears games and I give 2 away during each game in the first 4 weeks. Why? Because the very first time I gave away Bears tickets, my sales pretty close to 50% higher then the year before during the first game of the season.
I can assure you that you will see a bigger audience if you were to do a big ticket giveaway as well. And if you live in a state that doesn’t have a football team or the stadium is 4-5 hours away, then give away a big screen TV! This is actually something I also do after all the Bears tickets are given away.
You can buy 42-52 inch TV’s these days for as low as $350-$400. They are cheap and EVERYONE wants a new flatscreen TV!
To run this ticket giveaway or tv giveaway promotion and make as much money as you possibly you can, I suggest you have food and drink specials, just don’t do them as cheap as everyone else. You’re going to be getting people walking in the door to win these tickets or the TV, they are not there for your prices. So why discount and make less money when you don’t have too?
Think about it, you spend $200 in order to get an extra 50 people in the door by doing something different then everyone else in your area, that is fun and exciting, and you keep your prices at regular price instead of slashing them down just to bribe people to walk in…you’re going to make a lot more money and have better customers in your doors.
To increase the transaction size of each tab we tell the customers that for every drink they get, they get a ticket for a chance to win and every meal they buy they get 3 tickets. So they know the more they spend, the better the chances they have to win!
You definitely want to give the big giveaway away at the end of the game to keep people there as long as possible, but I also suggest that during half time you do some smaller give aways. Most owners will get give away from the liquor and beer reps. Me on the other hand think differently. I’d rather give away gift cards and party packages which then brings people back into my business and I suggest you do the same thing.
Think about it, people love to win things. Giving out t-shirts, hats, glasses, and other little items provided by our reps are great but does this put more money in our pockets? No. So come up with some kind of offers that you can give away where it’s going to bring people back in on another day.
Let’s say you want to pick up Monday night foot. Why not give out free pizza cards that are only good on Monday night football? This way you’re giving away something that might cost you $3-$4 but you’re getting them back in the door on a slower night to spend more money on other items and they will also bring people in with them!
In the next episode, I’m going to tell you how to make a fortune selling boneless wings during football season. Please share this video below and leave any comments or questions that you may have!
I’ll see you on the next episode.
