Hey I’m Nick Fosberg from Bar Owner Marketing Systems and today I’m going to give you a promotional idea you can run for the NBA finals in June to pack your place.
Now if you’re a sports bar, that’s packed all the time for big sporting events then this isn’t the perfect promotion for you because it involves discounting and I don’t agree with discounting when it’s not needed, but this could maybe benefit you on off nights during other times of the year.
What gave me this promotional idea was I actually received a reply to one of my emails I sent out for one of the bars I own. It was from another bar owner from outside my area. He said he loved getting my emails and that he wanted to share an idea with me that really helped his business. Pretty nice guy to go out of his way!
He said within the email that the one thing that worked for him really well during the hockey season was he was offering free wings and he packed the place when he was usually much slower.
Now I’m not a big fan of FREE because you attract some pretty cheap people. However you can offer free with restrictions that make you a profit and still offer a great value to the customer. That’s the key. Creating offers that benefit the customer but makes you a profit.
He said on average people spent about $30 and on average people were eating 12 wings which I think he said his cost was 35 cents or so. So for $3.50 he was getting back $30. Not bad right.
So I started thinking “What would be the most profitable way to make this offer?” Bone in wings are much more expensive for me then our boneless wings because we buy the big random chicken breasts and cut them down and batter them ourselves. Our cost is about .15 cents per boneless wing.
So here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to offer 10 wings for free during the finals, but the restrictions are they must purchase at least $5 in beverages, they pay for dressings, and it’s obviously dine in only. This way it’s going to cost me 1.50 and this offer is targeted towards drinkers, not water and pop drinkers because they know they must spend at least $5 in beverages to get this offer.
The best way to promote this event is using your e-mail list / text list / and Facebook ads targeted to the right demographics.
