A few weeks ago I released a new video that was all about outrageous promotions that you could run in a bar or restaurant. The reason for this is because I see so many owners struggling to figure out exactly what to do to be different and unique from the competition and how to attract new customers. I’ve got the solution for you!
I’m Nick Fosberg, and you’re watching Bar Restaurant Success, the place bar and restaurant owners visit to discover how to get ahead in business and in life.
Today I’m going to tell you how to run a food eating competition and make a boat load of money and excite the shit out of your customer, even if you don’t serve food!
So why run a food eating competition? Because people get engaged with the excitement of the competition, it’s totally different then your regular promotions, and your loyal customers will love getting into a competition like this with other regulars!
It’s all about excitement. That’s why the entertainment business is a multi multi billion dollar industry. People want to be entertained!
This month is National Pizza month so you’ve got the perfect excuse and opportunity to run a pizza eating competition to stir up some excitement!
The way to run this would be to charge $5 to get in and do a small or medium cheese pizza in order to cover your food costs. If you don’t serve pizza or if you don’t serve food, partner up with a pizza parlor in your area, that’s exactly what I did about 5 years ago when I didn’t have a kitchen.
To get the most sign ups, get your staff on social media posting about it, use your e-mail list, and of course, you want to send out a press release about this event to the TV, radio, and news stations because you will get a ton of free exposure out of this. I’ll tell you how you can get the press release I use in a minute but first let me tell you the prizes I use.
First place, ten thousand dollars! Not really! All they get is a trophy that cost me about 30 bucks and then I give them 10 free pizzas that are dine in only. Second place we do a $25 gift card and third place gets a free pizza!
Try to get at least 10-15 contestants and do this based on how fast they eat it. Depending on how many people you, try to do at least 3 separate rounds to make this last longer. So if you have 15 people, do 3 groups of 5 and each group goes separate. This also allows the people in the competition to watch other people as well.
So how do you promote this to get the best turn out?
As I said, send out a press release, use social media, get your staff on board, and use your email list to let people know about the competition and to get sign ups. Then a few days before the promotion, repeat that same process. Run some kind of pizza special for people that come in and watch.
In conclusion: Crazy, fun, exciting promotions like this is what people want. Don’t believe me. Ask 10 of your loyal customers and see what they say! You can’t be average anymore, you must stand out and be different.
If you have any fun, crazy, different promotions you’d like to share, please leave any comments below!

Not a bad idea! Anything that increases foot traffic and gets your restaurant/bar name out there, I suppose.
